Inside this course · Your tutor
How is a 'task' for an assistance dog defined in Australia? Can a dog just being there and providing comfort count as a task?
That's a key question. In Australia, under the Disability Discrimination Act, a task must be a specific action the dog is trained to do to help with a person's disability. General comfort or emotional support on its own does not meet the legal definition of a task for an assistance dog. The dog must actively do something, like pick up a dropped item or apply pressure during a panic attack. Would you like to explore examples of tasks for mobility support versus psychiatric support?

The first weeks are the foundation, not a warm-up

The first weeks in the home are not a warm-up phase, they are the foundation. The guidance we give owners during this window can prevent months of remedial work later, making early intervention one of the most powerful tools we have as trainers.

Is It Right for You?

This course is for you if

Dog trainers who want to add therapy or assistance dog training to their services.
People in disability support or mental health roles who want to understand animal-assisted intervention.
Volunteers looking to start a professional therapy dog visiting program in their community.
Anyone thinking about a career in this field who wants a solid foundation.
People who want to learn how to properly assess a dog's temperament for working roles.

It is probably not for you if

If you need a 'nationally recognised qualification', you should look for courses at TAFE or another Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
If you want to train your own personal dog to be a government-certified public access assistance dog. This course teaches the professional skills to train for others.
If you are looking for hands-on, in-person training practice with dogs. This is an online-only theory course.
If you are based outside Australia, as the course focuses on Australian laws and standards.

14-Day Money-Back Guarantee.

Try the full course for two weeks. If it is not for you, we refund you in full. No questions asked, no conditions.

More from students

“I love that it has different ways to learn! I'll keep learning about each flower's conditioning needs — I feel I've learnt so much already.”

Tammie O. · Verified student

“Very informative, and I like the focus on clients. It's better to give advice in small segments — just as we do with our dogs. Small steps.”

John H. · Verified student

“Real world responses — wow. The laws, and what it means to run a facility, is an eye opener. Even the less-common-pets section was eye opening — rabbits are illegal to keep as pets here in Queensland!”

Good to know

Common Questions.

Who is this course designed for?+
This course is designed for adult learners in Australia who want to work professionally with therapy or assistance dogs, whether as trainers, allied health professionals, disability support workers, or volunteers setting up a therapy dog visiting program. It suits people entering the field as well as those already working with dogs who want to formalise their knowledge. No prior formal training qualifications are required to enrol.
What practical skills will I develop through this course?+
You will develop skills across the full pipeline of therapy and assistance dog work, including conducting temperament assessments, building task-specific training plans for mobility, psychiatric, and medical alert work, and training handlers as part of a working team. The course also covers how to set up a therapy dog visiting program and work professionally within aged care, hospital, and disability support settings. Lessons are applied and hands-on in focus rather than purely theoretical.
Does this course cover Australian laws and standards, or is it based on overseas content?+
The course is specifically built around the Australian context. It covers the Australian legal framework for assistance animals, state-by-state public access rights, Assistance Dogs Australia accreditation standards, and NDIS-adjacent support roles. There is dedicated content on working within aged care and hospital facilities under Australian professional expectations, so the material is directly applicable to your work here.
How long will it take me to complete this course?+
The course is structured around 126 hours of study across 50 lessons and 5 modules. If you have existing experience and want to move through the content efficiently, the fast-track option allows you to complete it in approximately 14 hours by focusing on the core assessed material. Most learners will fall somewhere in between depending on how deeply they engage with each topic.
What certificate will I receive, and is it recognised?+
Upon completion you will receive a Certificate in Therapy and Assistance Dog Training. The course holds ICOES certification and carries CPD recognition, which supports its standing for continuing professional development purposes. While it is not a government-accredited VET qualification, it demonstrates verified, structured learning in a specialist field with growing professional demand.
How is this different from watching videos on YouTube or following online dog training communities?+
This course provides structured, sequenced learning across a curriculum designed specifically for the Australian therapy and assistance dog sector, covering areas that free online content rarely addresses in depth, such as legal frameworks, certification pathways, handler training, and working within clinical environments. It culminates in a capstone assessment where you design a complete therapy or assistance dog program, giving you a tangible, professional output. You also receive a recognised credential upon completion, which carries weight when working with organisations or clients.
