I have a client whose garden soil is heavy clay — what's the best way to improve it for planting?
Heavy clay is common across suburban Australia, especially in western Sydney and Melbourne. The fix is structure, not replacement. Add gypsum (calcium sulfate) at 1kg per square metre to break up clay particles. Then incorporate organic matter — compost, aged manure, straw — to build soil biology and improve drainage over time. Avoid digging wet clay (it compacts worse). Raised beds on top of clay work well as an interim solution. Want me to walk through a full soil improvement plan for a residential client?

The first weeks are the foundation, not a warm-up

The first weeks in the home are not a warm-up phase, they are the foundation. The guidance we give owners during this window can prevent months of remedial work later, making early intervention one of the most powerful tools we have as trainers.

More from students

“I love that it has different ways to learn! I'll keep learning about each flower's conditioning needs — I feel I've learnt so much already.”

Tammie O. · Verified student

“Very informative, and I like the focus on clients. It's better to give advice in small segments — just as we do with our dogs. Small steps.”

John H. · Verified student

“Real world responses — wow. The laws, and what it means to run a facility, is an eye opener. Even the less-common-pets section was eye opening — rabbits are illegal to keep as pets here in Queensland!”

Good to know

Common Questions.

Who is this course designed for?+
This course is designed for Australians looking to build a career in horticulture, including career changers exploring the green industries, garden enthusiasts ready to go professional, council and parks workers wanting structured knowledge, and nursery or landscaping staff seeking formal development. No prior qualifications are required, though a general interest in plants and outdoor environments will help you get the most from the material.
What topics does the course cover?+
The course covers ten subject areas across 100 lessons, including plant science, soil science, propagation techniques, pest and disease management, irrigation and water management, landscape design principles, nursery operations, and sustainable horticulture. You will also work through practical topics such as identifying Australian native plants and weeds, reading soil test reports, designing irrigation plans, and exploring career pathways across the Australian horticulture industry. The course finishes with a capstone project that brings your learning together into a professional piece of work.
How long will it take to complete the course?+
The course is designed around approximately 242 hours of study, which you can spread across your own schedule at whatever pace suits you. If you have existing experience and want to move through the material more efficiently, a fast-track pathway is available at around 22 hours. Most learners will fall somewhere between these two depending on their background and how deeply they engage with each module.
Is this course recognised or accredited?+
The course is recognised by ICOES (International Council for Online Educational Standards) and carries CPD (Continuing Professional Development) recognition, making it useful for practitioners who need to demonstrate ongoing learning. While it is a certificate-level qualification rather than a nationally accredited vocational qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework, it is a credible credential for professional development purposes and can strengthen your CV, portfolio, and LinkedIn profile, as covered in Lesson 96.
Can I study on my phone or tablet?+
Yes, the course is delivered on an online platform that is accessible across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, so you can study at home or on the go. This makes it practical for people who are already working in gardens, nurseries, or parks and want to fit study around their existing schedule.
How is this different from watching gardening videos online?+
Free online videos can be useful, but they rarely provide the structured, progressive learning needed to work confidently across the full range of horticultural practice. This course builds systematically from plant science fundamentals through to irrigation design, nursery operations, pest management planning, and career development, with each lesson building on the last. You also finish with a recognised credential and a capstone project, which gives you something concrete to show employers or clients.
