How do I tell if a horse is in the early stages of colic?
Good instinct to catch it early — colic is the leading cause of equine mortality in Australia. Early signs include: repeatedly looking at or biting their flank, pawing the ground, restlessness, reduced gut sounds, sweating without exercise, and reduced or absent manure. Some horses will lie down and get up repeatedly or refuse food. If you suspect colic: remove feed, keep the horse walking gently, and call your vet immediately. Want me to walk through the different types of colic and their specific presentations?

The first weeks are the foundation, not a warm-up

The first weeks in the home are not a warm-up phase, they are the foundation. The guidance we give owners during this window can prevent months of remedial work later, making early intervention one of the most powerful tools we have as trainers.

More from students

“I love that it has different ways to learn! I'll keep learning about each flower's conditioning needs — I feel I've learnt so much already.”

Tammie O. · Verified student

“Very informative, and I like the focus on clients. It's better to give advice in small segments — just as we do with our dogs. Small steps.”

John H. · Verified student

“Real world responses — wow. The laws, and what it means to run a facility, is an eye opener. Even the less-common-pets section was eye opening — rabbits are illegal to keep as pets here in Queensland!”

Who is this course designed for?+
This course is built for a broad range of people connected to horses in Australia, including horse owners wanting structured knowledge, career changers exploring the equine industry, rural and regional workers looking to formalise practical skills, and parents of horse-riding children who want a deeper understanding of horse welfare and safety. Whether you are entirely new to horses or have years of hands-on experience, the course is designed to build and organise your knowledge in a practical, applied way.
What topics does the course cover?+
The course spans 100 lessons across 10 modules, covering horse behaviour and communication, daily care routines, nutrition and feeding, hoof care, equine health and first aid, safe handling and groundwork, tack fitting, float transport, and the Australian equine industry including career pathways and business basics. Specific lessons address Australian-relevant topics such as Queensland Itch, strategic worming in an Australian context, hard ground and terrain considerations for hoof care, and licensing requirements for float towing in Australia.
Do I need prior experience with horses to enrol?+
No prior formal experience is required. The course begins with foundational concepts such as how horses experience the world, herd dynamics, and reading body language, before building into more applied and complex topics. Whether you are approaching horses for the first time or looking to formalise years of practical knowledge, the course is structured to meet you where you are.
How long will it take to complete the course?+
The course is estimated at 241 study hours completed at a self-directed pace, which suits most learners who are balancing work, property commitments, or family responsibilities. What credential will I receive, and is it recognised?+
Upon successful completion, you will receive an Advanced Certificate in Equine Studies. The course is recognised by ICOES and carries CPD recognition, making it a credible addition to your professional profile within the Australian equine industry.
